Barcelona Chair

Chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.

The Barcelona Chair is one of the most iconic objects of modernist design, embodying the Bauhaus principles of clarity, proportion, and material honesty. Designed through a balance of geometric precision and luxurious restraint, the chair combines polished steel structure with soft leather upholstery, creating tension between rigidity and comfort. Its visual language is rooted in reduction, where every line and material choice serves both aesthetic and structural purpose.

What inspires me most about this piece is the way it balances strict structure with softness and human presence. I’m deeply drawn to the clarity of its form, the intentional use of materials, and the way simplicity itself becomes timeless. In my own work, this translates into creating systems that feel precise and structured while still allowing space for emotion and human connection.
